Club History

The Leesville Rotary Club was chartered on Thursday, December 4, 1924, courtesy of the Lake Charles Rotary Club. The first President was E. Gill Roberts, who served from 1924-1926. The Secretary was Perry G. Pye, who served as Secretary for seven years, from 1924-1931.

George R. Ferguson also served as the Secretary for seven years, from 1936-1943.

Dr. Lynn “Mr. Rotary” Hancock, a retired US Army (COL) and a Dentist, was a big promoter of Rotary and implemented the “Tooth Keeper Program” in the Leesville School. This program promoted healthy dental habits for the children of Leesville. After serving as Club President in 1981-1982, he served as District Governor of District 619 (now known as District 6190).

Another “Mr. Rotary” is in our club, having been introduced to Rotary by Dr. Hancock, was Venis “Steve” Serna, also a US Army Retired (CSM). Steve served the club as President in 1991–1992, then served as District Governor from 1997-1999.

The Leesville Rotary Club is involved with numerous community and international programs and events. Some of these are listed below:

– The club provides three scholarships a year to area high school students.
– The club also provides refreshments at the monthly retirement ceremony at Fort Polk, honoring the post’s retiring military members.
– The club also supports the Fort Polk Wounded Warrior Program (http://wtc NULL.html).
– The club holds a “Coloring Book” contest for the area 2nd grade students.
– The club maintains a walking path for a local senior citizens home.
– One of the biggest community events is the Cross Country Meet that is held every September at Hodges Gardens State Park for all local high school boys and girls.
– The club’s members support both The Heifer Program (http://www NULL.heifer and The Rotary Foundation (http://www NULL.rotary NULL.aspx), with almost 100% Paul Harris Fellows.
– For the past three years, the club has hosted an Interactive Art Project called “Chalk-A-Block” at the long-running Vernon Parish Mayfest.
– One of our newest programs is the “Guitar for Troops” program.

The club also has a handful of fund raisers to support the many programs that it provides the local community. The club runs a fair booth at the annual parish fair, and also holds the annual Bill Bailey Memorial Golf Tournament, which is named for one of the club’s long time Past Presidents.

The club has several members that have attended Rotary International Conventions, including ones held in Barcelona, Mexico City, and Scotland. The 2011 RI Convention in New Orleans was attended by five of our members.
